INTRODUCTION Club Combattente Asiatico is part of the Asian Gamefowl Society. This is an international club of breeders focussing on Asian gamefowl breeds (large & bantam). We publish a newsletter in 3 separate langauge versions: Dutch, English and German. Every member will receive a detailled memberlist and 3 newsletters a year. |
ITALIAN GAMEFOWL HISTORY Gamefowl breeding in Italy dates back to the days of the Roman Empire. A gamecock was regarded as a sign of vigour,strength, determination and courage. Roman commanders organized cockfights before going into battle to show their men that they must fight till the bitter end dispite being wounded. The Romans viewed the gamecock as a noble gladiator, and the cockfight was a solemn ceremoy that reinforced their belief that men should be as game and brave as a game cock. It was in Rome that the chicken truly reached its apotheosis. There it became a sacred bird, often used as the central figure of various methods of diviniation, apothecary, and as serious subect for philosophical inquiry. In Rome fighting cocks were trained like gladiators. The Romans introduced artificial spurs for combat, developed organized cockfighting and engraved fighting cocks on silver coins of the Empire. Archaeologists at Italian excavations of Pompeii (destroyed in 79 A.D) unearthed a mosaic of two cocks in combat. Pit sports in general took deep root in Roman society. . |
